Keeping Your Gums Healthy If You Cut Them While Eating

Cuts inside the mouth along the gum line can happen from a variety of different activities. Flossing and vigorous brushing often lead to minor cuts of the gum near the teeth; but cuts within the mouth can also come from sport related injuries and even something so simple as eating.
Those cuts that occur in the mouth along the gum line due to a trauma sustained during physical activity may require medical attention, while those sustained while eating, brushing or flossing typically do not.
Caring for a Cut on the gums
It is important to properly care for the cut on your gums should you have one since infections in the mouth can be detrimental to your oral health. If you have injured your gums while eating, you should take care to maintain proper oral hygiene practices until the wound heals.
Gently brush the wounded area after each meal. If you cannot brush, make it a point to rinse thoroughly after each time you eat. Do not floss the area until the wound heals.
If you are experiencing more severe pain and discomfort of the wound, you can topically apply aloe vera to the affected area to provide relief. Aloe vera has many health benefits and healing properties. Applying aloe twice daily will help the wound to heal much more rapidly.
Cuts of the gums sustained while eating are generally not serious, do not require medical attention and heal rather quickly. However, if you do not take care of your gums while the healing is underway, then you could potentially cause more issues.
If you have a cut on your gum and notice severe pain, redness, swelling, oozing or any secretion of fluid along with a fever, you should contact our office immediately as these could be signs of infection.
