Healing After an Oral Biopsy

Posted on 2/17/2017 by Dr. Janice Pliszczak
A woman suffering in pain from an oral biopsy.
When you have an oral biopsy, it can be a difficult time. This is often due to the stress of waiting for the results.

However, you need to make sure that you take the time to heal properly after the biopsy as well.

If you forget about that, you could end up with a wound in your mouth that is taking far longer than necessary to heal. Here are a few things that you can do to help make sure your wound heals up as quickly as possible.

What to Make Sure You Do After an Oral Biopsy

First, you need to make sure you follow the instructions given to you by the dentist that took the biopsy. Their instructions are going to be based off of your needs more than anything. Next, you need to make sure you are careful around the biopsy site.

Eating the wrong foods or even drinking the wrong beverages can hurt, so be mindful of what you consume. Stick with softer foods that aren't spicy or overly salty, and avoid acidic juices, sports drinks, and carbonated beverages.

You should also avoid smoking and drinking anything out of a straw while you are healing, as both of these can increase how long it takes for your biopsy area to heal.

Also, make sure you rinse as directed with a bit of saltwater 3-4 times a day for the first few days, then decreasing it as directed by your dentist. It only takes one cup of warm water and about a teaspoon of table salt to make the saline solution that will help your mouth heal. Keep it on hand, or make it fresh each time. Just make sure you use it.
