What Is Enamel Erosion?

Posted on 10/31/2023 by Weo Admin
Close-up of teeth with a gap at Janice K. Pliszczak, DDSA healthy tooth enamel is a sign of a disease-free mouth. This outer surface of the tooth protects the inner dentin from bacteria and infections. Unfortunately, the enamel is susceptible to damage and wear and tear, resulting in erosion.

When the enamel experiences excessive wear, it exposes the dentin, leading to severe pain and discomfort. In most cases, enamel erosion occurs due to a lack of essential minerals such as calcium. Calcium helps in strengthening the enamel. When it is drained from the teeth, the enamel weakens. Read on and learn more causes of enamel erosion:

Sugary and Acidic Foods

Items that are high in sugar and acids can weaken the tooth enamel. If you brush and floss the weak enamel, it will likely wear away. Unfortunately, the enamel cannot repair itself after damage. This means that it cannot grow back.

The good news is that some practices can help to prevent erosion. This may involve reducing the consumption of acidic and sugary food and drinks. Be sure to consume enough water if you must eat or drink these items. This helps to rinse the mouth and limit the time sugar and acids remain on the teeth.

Dry Mouth

A dry mouth is the reason for many dental problems. It leads to bacteria accumulation, which can produce acids that destroy the enamel. Do you know you can increase saliva production in the mouth by implementing practices such as drinking enough water and chewing sugar-free gum? Sufficient saliva in the mouth keeps the mouth clean to prevent build-ups. It also neutralizes acids likely to weaken the enamel.

Teeth Grinding

Teeth grinding places unnecessary pressure on the teeth's biting surfaces, which can lead to enamel erosion. If left untreated, this habit can cause severe teeth damage and tooth loss. Do you experience teeth sensitivity, pain, teeth discoloration, or sharp edges on the teeth? Chances are your teeth are at risk of damage. Contact us and learn effective ways to treat enamel erosion and how to prevent it in the future.
