Oral hygiene practices everyday can defiantly affect your overall health. You have been encouraged by your dentist to brush twice a day and floss at least once a day for probably as long as you can remember to ensure you're getting your teeth and gums as clean as possible.

Getting all those tiny spaces can be tricky and may not be the most convenient at times. Let's talk about whether or not a water flosser could benefit you.

Should You Consider a Water Flosser?

Overall using a string floss in your daily routine is the best way to get spaces between teeth clean. If you have had success with traditional floss we encourage you to continue using it.

A water flosser also known as a water pick, is used to get into small, hard to reach places and along the gum line. You should know that this is not a portable unit and needs to be plugged into an outlet.

It has a reservoir for water and is very easy to use. It is not a replacement to string floss however. Sometimes you can forget to floss your teeth or maybe you just don't like doing it at all, so if this device encourages you to get the job done, then we would recommend it as an addition to your other oral hygiene tools. A water flosser is a gentle and effective way to get into areas that are too irritated for string floss.

A string floss, when used too aggressively, can hard your gums. It may even cause them to bleed. Using a water flosser can be less stressful on those areas and may even help stop the bleeding. If bleeding continues, we recommend that you call us and get in as soon as possible. Letting it go too long can lead to other problems that can be prevented.

Our goal is to make sure you keep your teeth as long as you can. If you would like more information about using a water pick please call us to set up an office visit. Please remember regular six-month cleanings are in your best interest to prevent tooth decay and tooth loss. Give us a call and we'll get you in. We want to see you smile.
