The Intention Behind Having Multiple Sedation Options

Posted on 10/10/2018 by Janice K. Pliszczak, DDS
The Intention Behind Having Multiple Sedation OptionsFor many people, a trip to the dentist is a stressful experience. Feeling stressed or anxious about a dental procedure doesn't help anyone involved, including you and your dentist.

We want you to be as relaxed as possible, and for that reason, multiple dental sedation options are available. By choosing the right one, you'll have a stress-free appointment.

Inhaled Sedation

Sometimes known as “laughing gas”, this type of sedation involves breathing in nitrous oxide via a mask over the nose. The gas works to relax you, and the good news is that it wears off quickly. Simply breathing in oxygen for five minutes after your appointment will counter the effects, and you should even be able to drive yourself home.

Oral Sedation

Oral sedatives come in pill form, and depending on the dosage, they can either make you drowsy or fall asleep completely. If you choose oral sedation for your dental procedure, you'll want to have a loved one drive you home afterwards.

IV Sedation

This type of sedation involves administering the drug via an IV in the hand or arm. It works quickly and allows a dentist to adjust the level as needed. While this option is both effective and safe when administered by a trained professional, some people with a fear of needles may not find it to be a good option.

General Anesthesia

This is a type of deep sedation that will make you unconscious. While under the effects of the medication, you won't wake up until the effects of the drug wear off or you receive medication to reverse the effects. General anesthesia is often used for wisdom teeth extractions and other major dental surgeries.

We understand how debilitating dental anxiety can be, so we make every effort to ensure you feel welcome and comfortable. Call us today to learn more about our sedation dentistry options.
