Symptoms Your Filling is Sitting Too High

Posted on 9/20/2019 by Janice K. Pliszczak, DDS
Symptoms Your Filling is Sitting Too HighCavities are not fun at all and getting them filled with either a traditional filling or a composite filling can fix the problem. From time to time, we see patients who continue to have pain after they have a tooth filled and there could be a good reason for that; fillings that are sitting too high.

Tooth Pain After a Filling

Once we have identified a cavity, we will take care of you by numbing the area surrounding the cavity, cleaning it thoroughly to remove any decay and then carefully filling the tooth.

You can expect to have some tooth sensitivity for a few days to a few weeks following a filling, especially when you consume very hot or very cold foods and liquids, but the sensitivity should fade with time. If you are still experiencing pain when you bite down or you feel like your teeth are not touching correctly, please give us a call right away. It is possible that your filling may be sitting too high.

Even if you are not experiencing pain with a filling that high, there are other complications that can result in the need for additional dental work if it is left untreated. Headaches and TMJ can occur when you have difficulty biting down or chewing. This can lead to pain in the jaw and your facial muscles, especially when you first wake up. When a filling is too high and you bite down hard on it, this can split the tooth that was filled resulting in the need for a tooth extraction or a root canal, depending on the level of damage.

Premature wear, shifting teeth, pain, sensitivity and headaches are all symptoms that should not be ignored. If you are experiencing any of these, please call our office right away and set up an appointment for an exam.
