Can You Tell if a Filling Will Need Replacing Soon?

Can You Tell if a Filling Will Need Replacing Soon? Many times, people come into our office because their filling has fallen out. They did not have any advance warning. The filling merely fell out. That is part of why you should schedule regular dental checkups and cleanings every six months. Doing so can prevent any problems with fillings. So, how can tell a filling needs replacement? The information below will help you take care of the issue before it gets worse.

Some of the Symptoms

You need to have your filling replaced if you suddenly experience pain and sensitivity around a filled tooth. This is a signal that you need to call our office and have the tooth checked. You may have a small but significant crack that can only be seen on an x-ray. If you do have a crack, decay may have developed inside the tooth. If you want to keep small dental issue from turning into a major dental problem, you need to schedule a dental appointment right away. You may also feel pressure when biting down on a filled tooth. If so, the pulp may be damaged and the tooth needs a root canal.

How Long Do Fillings Last?

Another way you can figure if a filling needs replacement is to estimate how long you have had the filling. Amalgam fillings, while not as aesthetically pleasing as composites, last a fairly long time. However, that does not mean they do not wear down or degrade. If your amalgam filling is over 15 years old, you need to replace it. A tooth-colored or composite filling lasts around half as long, or about 8 years if you practice good dental care.

If you have not had any recent dental work, or you are due for a check-up, contact our office today. Maintaining your fillings and cosmetic restorations is part of good dental care. Give us a call or fill out our online contact form to schedule a cleaning and exam.
