If You Ignore a Cavity, It Is Not Going to Disappear

Posted on 12/21/2020 by Janice K. Pliszczak, DDS
If You Ignore a Cavity, It Is Not Going to DisappearIf you discover a cavity or we find a cavity, you should have it treated immediately. Cavities will not magically disappear, resolve themselves, or get smaller. Instead, the decay continues until you need a root canal, or must have a tooth extracted. Therefore, any decay should be treated immediately.

Why You Cannot Overlook a Cavity

A cavity, as noted, continues to increase in size if you don't have it filled. Therefore, to reduce any additional costs, you need to fill the cavity right away. Doing so will preserve most of your tooth's structure and make it easier to care for your teeth. While cavities will not spread to the surrounding teeth, they do have an overall impact on your oral health. First, the conditions that lead to a cavity in one tooth can trigger decay in other teeth. Also, If a cavity is not treated and an infection results, the infection will spread to the other teeth. While decay, in and of itself, will not spread to the other teeth, a resulting infection will affect all the teeth and gums.

Your Best Line of Defense

To ensure against getting cavities, it is helpful to practice preventive dental care. This means you should follow a regular program of brushing in the morning and at night and flossing once a day. You should also have regular dental check-ups and fill any small cavities right away. Decay can wreak havoc in your mouth if you ignore it. That is why you need to make it a point to regularly care for your gums and teeth and schedule regular dental exams.

Have you scheduled a dental exam within the last 6 months? If not, give us a call today for an assessment and consultation. If you have any cavities, have them treated immediately. Taking a proactive attitude will ensure a better dental check-up and that you experience less costly dental repairs.
