Are X rays Really Necessary Every Year?

Posted on 11/21/2022 by Janice K. Pliszczak, DDS
Are X rays Really Necessary Every Year?X-rays are taken by dentists to evaluate your dental well-being, especially by observing parts of your teeth that are not easily visible during normal check-ups. While they are useful, it is not wise to get x-rays taken unless they are required as part of your treatment.

Why do dentists take x-rays of your teeth?

Dental x-rays are commonly used during dental exams for a variety of reasons. In adults, dental x-rays may be taken to identify areas of tooth decay that are otherwise not visible. For example, the dentist may use x-rays to evaluate the tiny spaces between your teeth and an underlying filling. X-rays can also help point out early signs of a decaying tooth, monitor your jaw for the formation of teeth if you are an adolescent, and observe your oral health in general.

The x-rays help dentists to recommend preventative action as they allow for issues such as bone loss to be identified in time. If your dentist plans to recommend dentures, tooth implants or other dental procedures, they will take x-rays of your mouth to help them prepare. In the past, people have raised concerns about the possible risk of exposure to radiation. Improvements in technology have, however, meant that patients are exposed to drastically lower levels of radiation with the introduction of digital x-rays. A dentist will also make use of a lead covering fitted with a thyroid collar to protect your throat during dental x-rays.

How frequently are dental x-rays required?

According to the American Dental Association, a healthy adult that does not suffer from any major dental problems should only get x-rays after 2-3 years. The ADA further recommends that individuals with a recurring case of tooth decay or some other oral complications can have x-rays taken twice in a single year.
